The GWSR have released their dates for 2024’s Steam and Diesel Driving and Firing Experience dates.
As with previous years, there will be two Class 37 experience days in 2024 – Friday 5th April and Friday 4th October.
Not only do you get a chance to drive either 37215 or D6948 for the full 14 miles of the line from Broadway to Cheltenham Race Course with a rake of seven Mk. 1 coaches (just like the GWSR crews), but you also have the opportunity, should you be willing, to act as Secondman (a very important role in itself) and undertake the tasks of that role – for this you will need to have a good general level of fitness as it involves working in confined spaces at track level.
The day begins at 0900 with a briefing, general talk about the line and the locos and a full breakfast. You will also get a tour of Toddington Signal Box and the Diesel Sheds, amongst other extras before you then get your hands on the loco. Anticipated finish time will be 1730.
Cost is £495 for participants who are required to be over the age of 18 and can be accompanied by up to two guests (16+) for an additional £30 each. But, be fast as these are very popular and sell out very, very quickly!!
