On to the locos, and D6948 was scheduled to work the Saturday of the Autumn Mixed Traffic Gala at the end of October however, due to crewing availability, it was withdrawn from the roster at the last minute with 45149 taking its place. In certain quarters it was written that D6948 was removed due to failure however this is totally untrue and the loco remains fit for traffic, seeing use the following week on the Purple timetable. Sister, 37215, has been inactive for a number of weeks as the timetable winds down having completed a lot of turns in the early part of 2024. At least one of the locos is likely to see some use on the Mince Pie specials after Christmas as well as performing stand-by duties for the Santa Specials. Both locos received some minor attention on 06/11 with bed-plates being drained – a job that was long overdue judging by the amount of waste fluids that drained out! Oils were also topped up where required. Both locos remain fit for traffic.

One of the less glamorous maintenance jobs! Draining the bed plate. Grim!

Over the Autumn Extravaganza, D6948 was used for cab visits and saw a steady stream of people throughout both days taking a big interest in the loco. Several of the visitors were former BR Drivers who has worked 37s across the UK – including in Scotland and in the North East. We also received a few new expressions of interest for membership. The more the merrier!!

The timetable for 2025 should be completed and publicised in the next few weeks, however things are a little uncertain as to how the start of the season will look after the sale of the Class 117 DMU set by the CDRL. Once the uncertainties are ironed out then the timetable will be made available however it is safe to say that there probably won’t be a drastic increase in diesel running days but the mileages on offer will be greater. The Diesel Gala for 2025 also moves back to its more usual slot over the last weekend of July and will take place on the 25, 26 and 27th July.
