On Sunday 19th August, the first sections of the new buffer beam ‘skirts’ were welded into place on the no.1 end of D6948 by Mark Stanley and Phil Seymour. This is a difficult and precision task involving the fitting of three sections at each end of the loco. This followed the essential movement of a number of buffer beam pipe fittings (see previous post) which were necessary to fit the skirts, and the installation of the new steam heat pipe connections (click on the title for more pictures).

The original water delivery chute for refilling the boiler water tank together with associated handholds have been uncovered. These had been plated over many years ago and were all but invisible – however reference to original photographs and careful measurement revealed their location and the body work was cut in the right places. click to continue reading
New steam heat pipework connections have been sourced and now fitted to the buffer beam at both ends of the loco. This needs to be done before the retro fitting of new buffer beam ‘skirts’ to the original design.
